With thundering waterfalls, untamed wilderness, and massive ocean swells, the power and rawness of nature are evident across Maui’s terrain. For another demonstration of the natural strength and wonder found on Maui, head to the Nakalele Blowhole, a natural geyser located on the island’s northwestern tip.
Bring your camera along to the Nakalele Blowhole in Hawaii, where water can shoot up to 100 feet in the air when the surf and wind are high. On flat days there may not be much to see, but when the ocean is really pumping, this phenomenon can happen repeatedly every few minutes. This marvel occurs when sea water gets trapped in an underwater lava tube or sea cave and is prevented by the waves’ pressure from retreating back into the sea. With nowhere else to go, the water explodes up through a hole in the rocks and into the air, putting on quite a show for spectators. With the right timing and sunlight, you may be able to spot a rainbow in the mist.
Nearby there is also a rocky outcropping with a large heart-shaped hole that provides fantastic photo opportunities. This can be seen along the trail if you hike along the shorter route from the parking area.
The Nakalele Blowhole in Hawaii is an amazing attraction to admire from afar, and visitors should keep in mind the power and unpredictability of the ocean. This has been a site of drownings when people have gotten pulled into the hole or knocked off the rocks by rogue waves. Keep your distance and never climb down onto wet rocks.
Planning Your Excursion to Nakalele Blowhole
The Nakalele Blowhole is located approximately 8 miles north of Kapalua. Park either at the 38 mile marker or the 38.5 mile marker (shorter route), where you will take a trail that leads down to the blowhole.
