Big Beach, also known as Makena Beach or Oneloa Beach, is often awarded the title as one of the top beaches in Maui, so this is one not to miss. Aptly named, Big Beach stretches for over a half-mile. Though this is a popular beach due to its pristine beauty, its size allows for plenty of space to spread out if you’re willing to walk a ways down the shore to claim your own space.
The length at Big Beach makes it an ideal location for a shoreline stroll. Since it is west facing, look no further for your site to enjoy a sunset walk on the beach. However, though it offers beautiful scenery, Big Beach is not known as a consistently good swimming beach, especially when there is a large south swell. The waves here crash right at the water’s edge, making it difficult for those who aren’t confident in navigating large waves or for those with children. Even if you’re not able to get in the water, during a large swell you may have front row seats to an exciting lineup of boogie boarders taking advantage of the waves.
